The Bush administration in one sentence by William Rivers Pitt.

fun with surveys

So I saw this on Wren’s blog, but I also got it in an email from my friend D. Although his version was a bit different. I snagged Wren’s version instead. I also inserted a healthy amount of personal opinion (surprise, surprise) in an otherwise-unneeded forum.

1. What time did you get up this morning? 7:45 AM
2. Diamonds or Pearls? I like pearls. Diamonds are evil, and in my opinion, anyone wearing a diamond can thank some poor kid’s limbs being blown off (yes, I was the production editor on Blood Diamonds, the book that sparked the film. I really was!). Not that pearls are exactly humane, either, but diamonds just suck. Sorry, everyone I know who has a diamond wedding ring!
3. What was the last film you saw at the cinema? Damn. Probably The Queen. Ages ago. When it came out.
4. What is your favorite TV show? Currently 24 and Lost. But they’re the only shows I actually watch that are on. Other ones? Six Feet Under, Buffy, Angel, Firefly, Dead Like Me, Big Love.
5: What did you have for breakfast? healthy stuff.
6. What is your middle name? c + nine other syllables. :)
7. What is your favorite cuisine? Indian.
8. What foods do you dislike? Carrots and cilantro and lots of other vegetables, unfortunately.
9. Your favorite Potato chip? I actually don’t really like potato chips. Or fries for that matter.
10. What is your favorite CD at the moment? I am currently returning to the old war horses: Beethoven symphonies and the like. But I always love Renaissance and seventeenth-century dance music (Charpentier, Lully, Praetorius, and dance-like music by Gibbons, Byrd, etc.). I have a lot of CDs with that kind of music on ‘em.
11. What kind of car do you drive? Haven’t had a car in five years. I’ve been without one for eleven years of my adult life.
12. Favorite sandwich? Not a big sandwich person.
13. What characteristics do you despise? Dishonesty, loudness in general, and people generally living inauthentically (which is unfortunately a large part of the population)
14. Favorite item of clothing? My tweed skirt in winter and my circle skirt in summer (with a petticoat!).
15. If you could go anywhere in the world on vacation, where would you go? Iceland, Turkey, or Bali (all from a cultural standpoint)
16. What color is your bathroom? Um. Well, the walls are painted yellow. But so are the walls of the whole apartment.
17. Favorite brand of clothing? Ann Taylor. I like Anthropologie but those clothes are made for tiny Javanese women.

20. Where were you born? boulder. And you know what? Everyone wishes he or she was from Boulder.
21. What is your favorite sport to watch? Trampolining.
22. Who do you least expect to send this back?
23. Person who will respond first?
24. What laundry detergent do you use? anything liquid and cheap
25. Coke or Pepsi? coke. I refuse to drink Pepsi and I always ask if it’s really Coke.
26. Are you a morning person or night owl? either, or.
27. What size shoe do you wear? 8
28. Favorite animal? dogs, squids, penguins, jellyfish
29. Any news you’d like to share with everyone? nope.
30. What did you want to be when you were little? I wanted to be Jewish, and I always thought I would be an actress or an artist. I also thought I would win an Academy Award. Now I have zero interest in acting at all!
31. Favorite candy bar? not a candy bar person. but if I had to choose, then Ritter Sport.
32. What are your favorite childhood memories? smells and visions. My father waking me up in the middle of the night to get midnight snacks, probably. For a time when I was about four I would watch the milkman make his rounds: he would go to the house that was way across the meadow and lake that were opposite our house, so I could watch him drive all the way out there and back. I always felt like he and I were the only ones awake in the world at 4 AM.
33. What are the different jobs you have had in your life? Bridal gown specialist, bank teller (got fired for that one), editor (for years), librarian

48. Favorite fast food restaurant? yucky. I don’t even order pizza.
49. What color is your bedroom carpet? I think carpet is tacky so I try to always get rentals with hard-wood floors.
50. How many times did you take your drivers test? once, although I had to take a written test in IL. And I almost failed that. THAT was because they asked you what yellow circle meant and what orange triangles meant. I explained to them that I know what they mean when they have WORDS on them.

52. Which store would you choose to max out your credit card at? Boulder Early Music Shop.

55. Who are you most curious about their responses to this Questionnaire? eh.
56. Last person you went to dinner with? alex.
57. What are you listening to right now? liberry patrons.
59. What is your favorite color? pink.
60. Lake, Ocean or River? river.
61. How many tattoos do you have? no offense, but I really hate tattoos. I think they are usually tacky. With the exception of Sebethis’s who has gorgeous ones and you can tell it wasn’t just some “phase” she was trying to get through. Oh, and I had a Dutch friend when I lived in NYC who had an awesome tattoo she got in Western Samoa.

medieval tech support

Has everyone seen this? Yes, it feels very familiar to a librarian!

calamari

Everyone who knows how much I love cephalopods will appreciate this current event, sent to me courtesy of Brixton.

Time for a picture, so here is the Vampire Squid from Hell, aka Vampyroteuthis infernalis.

those crazy teenagers pushing drugs via email

This morning I had a patron who was completely insane.  She came up to me at the desk and told me that she was convinced that the library was responsible for a breach of security.  She apparently filled out a little form and put it in that box in the hallway with the African art  exhibit.  It had her email address on it.  She also wrote her email on some other form for the library and she was convinced that these teenagers “broke into” the little box in the hall or something and she wanted to complain because they keep emailing her.

I asked her what kinds of emails she was getting and she told me the teenagers were selling drugs.  I asked her what kinds of drugs and she told me Viagra and things like that.  In between her continual ranting and raving I tried to interject that these emails were spam and that spam is a fact of life.  She refused to accept this.

All this happened in about fifteen minutes so when she got back to her computer she had been logged off since she didn’t lock her session in. So she started flipping out about that.  Then my boss came up and suggested I put her on the research computer but I knew that this woman would cause a problem if that happened.  So I said no, I would override the system and just give her another session.  I warned the woman that it might not be for up to an hour and she said, “I don’t like you.  I don’t like you at all.  I don’t like your personality.” I told her I was very sorry she didn’t like me and that her session was going to be in art and nicely explained to her where she had to go and that I was doing her a giant favor by going against protocol like that.

I hope I’m not the only one who thinks that the guy playing Assad on this season of 24 is outrageously hot.

The only other eyes I’ve seen like that belong to Omar Sharif.

Now I’m finally going to watch Syriana.

two more days until Lent

which means it’s Calypso Time!

Since calypso leave Trinidad rock and roll really suffering bad.
No more rocking, no more rolling no more jumping up like a fool

whether you’re crazy or you’re lazy man you’ve just got to take it cool

this is calypso and everyone know this is strictly rhythm and rhyme

whether young or old jump in the line and shake your body in time

Plenty people trying their best but they’re making a mess just for the money they will put on a show and tell you that’s calypso

but you should come to Trinidad see how the people jumping mad

for as soon as we hear the true melody the jumping spirit comes naturally.

poll: wtf is this?

My mother sent this to me before Christmas.  I have no idea what it is.  People who have come over have pondered as well.  Is it a bear?  A chipmunk? A reindeer with circular antlers?  It’s no wonder I have so much crap when my mother keeps buying stuff like this for me.

Sigh.
